| HEALTH PROFESSIONS E-LETTER, June
2005
Dear Reader,
Let us now praise famous accrediting agency volunteers . .
.
With Memorial Day just behind us, the time is nigh to institute
a holiday in honor of the hundreds, probably thousands, of staff
and volunteers who keep health care accreditors running smoothly
and ensure the continued high quality of the US health care
educational system.
(And I'm not just saying that because I'd like another 3-day
weekend . . . )
For just one example of the yeoman's work accrediting agencies
are doing, see:

3. Happy 10th anniversary to the
Health Professions Network
The initial meeting to form the Health Professions Network
(HPN) was held in August 1995 in Norfolk, VA.
Attendees discussed a report from the National Commission
on Allied Health and the recommendations from six recent national
conferences on allied health. They also heard presentations
on interdisciplinary education and the impact of technology
upon health care education and practice.
Ten years later, the HPN continues to be a leading voice
on behalf of all allied health professions as they come together
and address the many challenges facing the US health care
system. To learn more, see:

4. Eight steps to providing language
services to patients
The nation's growing diversity poses special challenges for
small group practices and solo practitioners in providing
health care to individuals who are limited English proficient
(LEP).
A new report from the Commonwealth Fund recommends that small
health care providers developing language services should:
- Designate responsibility
- Conduct an analysis of language needs
- Identify resources in the community
- Determine what language services will be provided
- Determine how to respond to LEP patients
- Train staff
- Notify LEP patients of available language services
- Update activities after periodic review

and health care providers, a portion of funds will be reserved
for arts programs serving those living with HIV/AIDS, their
families, and/or caregivers.

expand students' science skills

total of nearly $25,000 in grants from the ASRT Education

of science, technology, and health care.
The grants are designed to raise awareness of the radiologic
sciences and to enhance students' understanding of the practical
