2. Download free materials to promote allied health to K-12
students
As the nationwide shortage of health care workers in many professions
continues to grow, so does the importance of recruiting the
workers of the future.
To help prime the pump, the advocacy team of the Health Professions
Network has developed and distributed nationwide a brochure
and poster for K-12 students. The materials are available at:
http://www.healthpronet.org/exploring_ahp/
The Health Professions Network is a group of professionals
representing diverse aspects of allied health, including primarily
provider organizations but also educators, accreditors, and
administrators. The group works together in a
cooperative and interactive manner on issues relevant to health
care.

6. Certification in breast ultrasound planned for 2004
The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists is developing
new post-primary certification to allow individuals who are
certified and registered in mammography, and meet clinical experience
requirements, to demonstrate additional qualifications in breast
ultrasound.
Currently plans call for the new certification to be available
by 2004.

7. RTs favor resident physicians as teachers
A recent study from Indiana University showed that radiologic
technology students preferred courses taught by radiology residents
versus radiologist faculty members.
Ninety-six percent of students agreed or strongly agreed that
the course was well-taught by radiology residents, while 89
percent felt the same about radiologist faculty members.
Researchers also found that the costs of instruction by residents
were lower, and that residents valued the teaching experience,
reported learning the material better themselves, and forged
a bond between future RTs and radiologists.
The study was presented at the Radiological Society of North
America (RSNA) meeting in Chicago.
