The deadline for compliance with HIPAA's Transaction and
Code Set Standards is rapidly approaching -- October 16, 2002.
To assist health care providers, the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services (CMS) is making information accessible via
their Web site at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/hipaa/hipaa2.
This Web site includes information on upcoming roundtables and
satellite broadcasts, as well as frequently asked questions
and other useful materials. HIPAA related questions may also
be submitted by e-mail at askhipaa@cms.hhs.gov
or by calling the HIPAA hotline at 410-786-4232.
CMS is advising all health care providers to request a one-year
extension in complying with this standard by October 16, 2002,
if there is any doubt that they will be compliant by the deadline.
Providers can request this extension at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/hipaa/hipaa2/ascaform.asp.
By filing for the one-year extension, providers will have until
October 16, 2003 to be HIPAA compliant. At the present time,
CMS is receiving approximately 600 applications each business
day.
