The ECU School of Allied Health Sciences has received
a $942,675 three-year grant from the Department of Health and
Human Services which will allow high school juniors and seniors
to explore and experience nine allied health professions.
The Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) will take students
through a progressive allied health career exposure and exploration
process by incorporating summer institutes, clinical observation
experiences in urban and rural settings, and mentoring by Allied
Health faculty and researchers at ECU. The program will target
students from educationally or economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
It will better prepare these students for success in applying
to and matriculating through college, particularly as
related to the pre-professional phase of an allied health program.
The HCOP Planning Committee was chaired by Dr. W. Richard Bamberg,
chair of the School of Allied Health Sciences Department of
Clinical Laboratory Science. Other committee members were Deborah
Ramey (Eastern AHEC), Dr. Skip Cummings (Interdisciplinary Rural
Health Training Program), Bonita Harriett (Interdisciplinary
Rural Health Training Program), Randy Collier (Pitt County School
System/Health Careers Academy Coordinator), and Virginia Hardy
(Brody School of Medicine).
Twelve high schools representing five eastern North Carolina
counties and one HBCU will be collaborators in this project.
