I. Welcome and Introductions

Meeting Minutes from December 5, 2001 accepted and approved with the following changes:

    • Elizabeth Isler - Community College enrollment increased from 3% to 40% with allied health being 20%

  1. Pat Porter - Dept. of Health & Human Services - Changes in the mental health plan - Handout (Blueprint for Change)
  2. Kathy Heilig - NCHA Workforce Survey completed Fall 2001
    • 57% response to survey
    • Survey covered three primary areas
      • Position availability
      • Recruitment Strategy and the implication
      • Where are the hospitals recruiting?
    • High demand professionals
      • Registered Nurses
      • Nursing Assistants
      • Rad. Techs
      • Housekeeping, dietary, and maintenance
      • Pharmacist

  1. Alan Brown - Data Committee Report
    • Three disciplines being studies
      • Speech-Language Pathology (finishing up)
      • Health Information Management - Cassina Hunt (starting up)

      • How/Who defines the scope of a study?
        • Suggestion(s)
          • Moses Goldmon - Should have broad representation
          • Whenever a workforce study is published, we should have a "kick off". Invite the key decision makers from that discipline. May help to get "buy in" from those groups.
        • Erin Fraher - New employee coming on board early February
  2. Tom Bacon - Council Funding Update
    • Executive Director Position - Lee McLean
      • Position description approved
      • May begin interviews on February 15th?
      • Can employ someone up to 75% time with full benefits + staff person
    • Can fully fund the costs of the Sheps Center (approx. $61,000)
  3. Carolyn Taylor - Presidents' Meeting
    • Scheduled for March 6, 9:30-2:30, Friday Center
    • Postcards will be sent out shortly
    • Email current Presidents' list to council members
IV. Round Robin

Alan Brown - Win a Step Up project (handout) help to address the shortage of nurses' aides.

Erin Fraher - 2000 data book is out.

Algie Gatewood - Handouts on scholarship programs available for Nurses and other health professionals.

Elizabeth Rogers - Elon University approval to move to DPT program. Last MPT class accepted last week.

Carolyn Taylor - Code Blue is back (brochure) program for young people in public schools to interest them in health careers.

Donna Benson - Report to Board of Governors
— Workforce needs of physicians and dentists
— Pharmacists and nurses presentation in February
— For the 1st time, we were able to put in the Board of Governors' long range plan objectives for the medical school, allied health, and nursing. Report hopefully approved by the Board.

Elizabeth Isler - Going to the board (4 practical nursing programs)

Tom Bacon - Approved AHEC for 2 more years of funding from Duke Endowment for Spanish language initiatives at reduced level with partner organizations.
